Summer lunch at Bhagat Tarachand

I love vegetarian food, yes VEGETARIAN, you read it right, but don’t be surprised or shocked as you know many of the so called Celebrities are either vegetarian or Vegans or turning into one of the two! People now a day take pride in saying that ‘We are Vegetarians”
A week back my friend and I had been to Mumbai for some shopping in Crawford Market. Shopping in the hot sun, well the sun didn’t show any mercy on us and kept being adamant; by 1.30 we were exhausted and famished, we knew where we were going to eat like greedy pigs.
We walked in to a hole in the wall (seriously) at Bhagat Tarachand Restaurant in Zaveri Bazaar, right next to the Mumbadevi Temple; Crawford Market. Let me tell you the hole in the wall is rather deep, it is a three storeyed building with ample seating on each floor, to our relief they also had an Airconditioned Section.
Had heard about their authentic Sindhi food reviews and couldn’t wait to gulp. Since I was brought up with Sindhis, my love for the food still continues, we ordered the thali for the simple reason that we had no energy to choose from the long list and of course greedy people like us who want to taste the most with their moolah it seems like the best bet!

Our thali arrived and we were so thrilled and hungry like kids just started gulping, believe me the fried lady’s finger (Bhindi) was just eternal and the dahi wada in the hot summer was so refreshing with perfect taste of the curd and the little chilli powder sprinkled on it. The papad churi- bits of crunchy crushed papad with a tadka of spices was just super. The dal fry made from yellow moong dal tempered with spices and ghee with plain rice made me nostalgic of the times I lived in Pimpri ( The Sindhi Capital of Pune)
To further quench our thirst was the perfectly cooled chaas which was made with simple cumin (jeera) powder and salt made our parched souls happy! The thali also had paneer with mutter which I could have given a pass. For sweet we were served Gulab Jamun which was nice but nothing worth raving about.
The service was average, very much the kinds one can expect in such joints though the staff quite generous in asking what else we will eat. For the price of 160 INR I would recommend it a try if you are at Crawford ! if you are making a special trip to Crawford market to eat the thali, you may want to think again!

Happy Eating.
